Displayed in four glass island cases, visible from all sides, and a wall case by Frank America, the space shares the open and welcoming ground floor of the Balboa Park institution with a museum shop and café, enticing visitors to purchase admission to the more formal galleries upstairs. The second-floor galleries house changing exhibits and a gallery devoted to beaded works which mostly are from Africa and Latin America. Many of the artifacts are housed in acrylic table cases with drawers that allow the visitors to view additional collection items.
Frank America is proud that this project is one of its first U.S. display installations for the recently formed American company, as it represents the successful integration of the museum’s vision, its architecture, and the collection’s display. The lobby cases will be dismantled for a fundraising event, then reinstalled with different collection items in the near future, taking advantage of the flexibility for which the Frank Showcase System is appreciated.
Recently re-opened in September 2021 after the completion of a transformative renovation project, designed by LUCE et studio, the Mingei International Museum is dedicated to furthering the understanding of the art of the people (mingei) from all eras and cultures of the world. The museum lobby contains an introductory installation of objects from its collection, intended to “spark creativity, imagination, and joy.”
